Women (Al-Nesaa)
176 verses, revealed in Medina after The Test (Al-Mumtahanah) before The Quake (Al-Zalzalah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence Allah, through whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): for Allah ever watches over you. (1) Give the orphans their property, and do not exchange the corrupt for the good; and devour not their property with your property; surely that is a great crime. (2) If you fear that you cannot act justly towards the orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you; two, three, four of them. But if you fear that you cannot do justice, then one only, or, those you possess. It is likelier then that you will not be partial. (3) Give to women their dowers willingly, but if they forego part of it themselves, then use it to your advantage. (4) And do not entrust to those who are weak of judgment the possessions which God has placed in your charge for [their] support; but let them have their sustenance therefrom, and clothe them, and speak unto them in a kindly way. (5) And test the orphans till they are fit to get married (reach full age); then if you find them of proper judgement, hand over their wealth to them; and do not devour it by spending excessively and hastily, fearing that they will grow up; and whoever is not in need must abstain; and whoever is needy may use from it in a reasonable measure; and when you hand over their wealth to them, get witnesses over them; and Allah is Sufficient to take account. (6) Male and female are entitled to their legal share in the legacy of their parents and relatives, whether it be small or large. (7) If other relatives, orphans or needy people are present at the time of the division, then provide for them out of it, and speak kindly to them. (8) Let people fear the day when they leave small children behind them unprovided, and how concerned they would be for them. So fear God and say the right things to them. (9) Those who devour the possessions of the orphans unjustly devour only fire, and will surely burn in Hell. (10)
