Women (Al-Nesaa)
176 verses, revealed in Medina after The Test (Al-Mumtahanah) before The Quake (Al-Zalzalah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ O ye mankind! fear your Lord; Who created you of a single soul and He created therefrom the spouse thereof, and of the twain He spread abroad men manifold and women. And fear Allah by Whom ye importune one another, and the wombs. Verily Allah is ever over you a Watcher. (1) And give the orphans their wealth and do not exchange the pure for the foul; and do not devour (or use up) their wealth, mixing it with your own; this is indeed a great sin. (2) If you fear that you might not treat the orphans justly, then marry the women that seem good to you: two, or three, or four. If you fear that you will not be able to treat them justly, then marry (only) one, or marry from among those whom your right hands possess. This will make it more likely that you will avoid injustice. (3) Give to women their dowers willingly, but if they forego part of it themselves, then use it to your advantage. (4) And do not give away your property which Allah has made for you a (means of) support to the weak of understanding, and maintain them out of (the profits of) it, and clothe them and speak to them words of honest advice. (5) Prove orphans till they reach the marriageable age; then, if ye find them of sound judgment, deliver over unto them their fortune; and devour it not by squandering and in haste lest they should grow up Whoso (of the guardians) is rich, let him abstain generously (from taking of the property of orphans); and whoso is poor let him take thereof in reason (for his guardianship). And when ye deliver up their fortune unto orphans, have (the transaction) witnessed in their presence. Allah sufficeth as a Reckoner. (6) For men is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, be it little or much - an obligatory share. (7) And when there are present at the division the relatives and the orphans and the needy, give them (something) out of it and speak to them kind words. (8) Let those (disposing of an estate) have the same fear in their minds as they would have for their own if they had left a helpless family behind: Let them fear Allah, and speak words of appropriate (comfort). (9) Those who devour the property of orphans unjustly, devour Fire in their bellies, and shall assuredly roast in a Blaze. (10)
