The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) (1) And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- (2) And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- (3) Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. (4) Thinks he that none can overcome him? (5) saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? (6) Thinks he that none sees him? (7) Did We not grant him two eyes, (8) One tongue, and two lips, (9) and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? (10) But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... (11) And what have you understood, what the valley is! (12) (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) (13) Or the giving of food in a day of privation (14) of an orphaned relative (15) Or some poor wretch in misery, (16) so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. (17) They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), (18) But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). (19) Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. (20)
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
