Dawn (Al-Fajr)
30 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Night (Al-Layl) before The Forenoon (Al-Duhaa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn (1) And [by] ten nights (2) by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) (3) And [by] the night when it passes, (4) There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! (5) Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: (6) Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, (7) the like of which was never created in the land, (8) And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, (9) And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - (10) Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). (11) And made therein much mischief. (12) So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. (13) Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, (14) As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." (15) But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." (16) By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, (17) Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, (18) And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. (19) and love the riches, loving them ardently. (20) Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, (21) And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, (22) And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? (23) He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! (24) None can punish as He will punish on that day, (25) Nor shall any bind with His bond. (26) [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, (27) Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. (28) "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! (29) And enter thou My Garden. (30)
