He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away (1) Because the blind man came unto him. (2) But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- (3) Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? (4) Now he who waxes indifferent, (5) So you are after him! (6) And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. (7) But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, (8) And is also fearful (of God), (9) From him you are distracted. (10) Assuredly this is a reminder (11) and so, whoever is willing may remember Him (12) upon pages high-honoured, (13) uplifted, purified, (14) In the hands of scribes (15) Honourable and Pious and Just. (16) Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! (17) [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? (18) Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, (19) and then makes it easy for him to go through life; (20) Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. (21) and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, (22) Not one he has not yet completed what he was commanded. (23) Let the human reflect on the food he eats, (24) [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; (25) And We split the earth in fragments, (26) Then We cause therein the grain to grow, (27) And grapes and herbage, (28) And olive-trees and palm-trees (29) Orchards thick with trees, (30) and fruits, and pastures, (31) (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. (32) But when the Shout cometh (33) On that day man will run away from his brother. (34) And his mother and his father, (35) As well as his wife and children. (36) on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- (37) Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, (38) and be cheerful and joyous. (39) And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, (40) Dust shall cover them (41) Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. (42)
True are the words of God the Almighty.
