The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who covers himself [with a garment], (1) Rise up and warn! (2) Thy Lord magnify (3) And your garments purify! (4) And uncleanliness avoid (5) And do not favour others in order to receive more. (6) And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. (7) When the Horn is blown, (8) that day will be a harsh day, (9) Far from easy for the disbelievers. (10) Leave Me and him whom I created alone, (11) And give him vast riches, (12) And sons to be by his side!- (13) And made things easy for them. (14) Yet he desireth that I should give more. (15) Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. (16) I shall inflict on him hardship, (17) For he thought and he plotted;- (18) So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. (19) Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- (20) Then looked he, (21) Then he frowned and scowled, (22) then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, (23) And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, (24) "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" (25) I shall surely roast him in Sakar; (26) - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - (27) It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] (28) making [all truth] visible to mortal man. (29) Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). (30) For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. (31)
