The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you enveloped in your cloak! (1) Arise and warn! (2) And your Lord glorify (3) And your garments purify! (4) Pollution shun! (5) And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! (6) For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! (7) For when the trumpet blows (8) That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, (9) Dolorous for the unbelievers. (10) Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! (11) and appointed for him ample wealth (12) And sons abiding in his presence (13) And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. (14) Yet he wants that I should give him more. (15) Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. (16) and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. (17) For he had thought and calculated. (18) So let him be cursed! How he plotted! (19) Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! (20) He looked (at others); (21) Then he frowned and he scowled; (22) then he retreated, and waxed proud. (23) Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; (24) Nothing more than the speech of a man!" (25) Him shall I fling unto the burning. (26) And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? (27) Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- (28) It strips away the hide of man. (29) Over it are nineteen keepers. (30) For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. (31)
