The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you enveloped in your cloak! (1) arise, and warn! (2) And thine Lord magnify! (3) purify your garments; (4) and shun uncleanness, (5) And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. (6) be patient unto your Lord. (7) Then when the horn shall be blown, (8) that day will be a harsh day, (9) It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. (10) Leave Me and him whom I created alone, (11) And then bestowed upon him ample means, (12) and children as [love's] witnesses, (13) And made things easy for them. (14) Yet he desires that I should give more. (15) Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). (16) and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. (17) Indeed, he thought and deliberated. (18) So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! (19) Again, death seized him, how was his determining! (20) Then he looked, (21) Then he frowned and he scowled; (22) Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. (23) and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. (24) 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' (25) Soon I will cast him into hell. (26) And what will make you realize what hell is? (27) It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! (28) Darkening and changing the colour of man! (29) Over it are nineteen (guards). (30) For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. (31)
