56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 He looked (at others); 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
