20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you the (sleeping) enwrapped one! (1) keep vigil the night, except a little (2) (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night (3) Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure, (4) For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. (5) [and,] verily, the hours of night impress the mind most strongly and speak with the clearest voice, (6) Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. (7) Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity. (8) He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. (9) And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. (10) And leave Me alone [to deal] with those who give the lie to the truth - those who enjoy the blessings of life [without any thought of God] - and bear thou with them for a little while: (11) We have in store for them heavy fetters and a blazing Fire, (12) And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. (13) On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand. (14) Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. (15) Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. (16) If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, (17) Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. (18) Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. (19)
