Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! (1) Stand up in Prayer by night, all but a small part of it; (2) Half of it,- or a little less, (3) Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. (4) We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). (5) Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. (6) Indeed during the day you have a long schedule of occupations. (7) And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. (8) He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. (9) and endure with patience whatever people may say [against thee,] and avoid them with a comely avoidance. (10) And leave them to Me these wealthy deniers and give them some respite. (11) Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, (12) And a food that chokes, and a painful torment. (13) On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down. (14) Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. (15) Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. (16) How then, if ye disbelieve, shall ye escape, on a Day which shall make children grey-headed? (17) The Day when the heavens will be rent asunder and God's promise shall be fulfilled. (18) This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. (19)
