Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], (1) Stay up the night long save a little (2) of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, (3) Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. (4) We are about to reveal to you a mighty word. (5) Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. (6) whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. (7) But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly. (8) He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. (9) Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. (10) And leave them to Me these wealthy deniers and give them some respite. (11) Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. (12) and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, (13) (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. (14) We have indeed sent a Noble Messenger towards you, a present witness over you the way We had sent a Noble Messenger towards Firaun. (15) But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. (16) If you persist in denying the truth how will you escape the Day that will turn the children's hair grey. (17) [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? (18) Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord. (19)
