Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, (1) Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part (2) half of it, or reduce it a little; (3) Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. (4) Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. (5) Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. (6) surely in the day thou hast long business. (7) And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. (8) Lord of the East and Lord of the West there is no God except Him, therefore make Him your sole Trustee of affairs. (9) And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. (10) Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while; (11) Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. (12) and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, (13) On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. (14) Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger, (15) But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. (16) How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? (17) The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. (18) Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. (19)
