Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], (1) Keep vigil the night long, save a little - (2) For half the night, or reduce some from it. (3) Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation. (4) Indeed We shall soon ordain a heavy responsibility upon you. (5) Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. (6) whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. (7) And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion. (8) (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. (9) Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. (10) And leave them to Me these wealthy deniers and give them some respite. (11) Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, (12) And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment (13) On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. (14) BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: (15) Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. (16) How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? (17) Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. (18) This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. (19)
