Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, (1) keep vigil the night, except a little (2) of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, (3) or a little more; and with recitation, recite the Koran. (4) Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. (5) Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. (6) You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world. (7) And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. (8) He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. (9) And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. (10) Leave it to Me to deal with the affluent ones who give the lie (to the Truth), and bear with them for a while. (11) for, behold, heavy fetters [await them] with Us, and a blazing fire, (12) and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. (13) On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. (14) Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. (15) However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. (16) How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? (17) On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. (18) This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. (19)
