Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, (1) Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - (2) A half of it or a little less (3) Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure, (4) Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. (5) Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. (6) During the day, you are preoccupied with many activities. (7) And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. (8) [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs. (9) And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. (10) And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. (11) Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace, (12) food that chokes and painful punishment (13) On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand. (14) Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. (15) However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. (16) If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, (17) The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled. (18) This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! (19)
