The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) Indeed, they see it [as] distant, (6) And We behold it nigh. (7) Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, (21) Except those who pray, (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) (28) And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; (31) And those who keep their trusts and covenants; (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). (35)
