The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, (2) From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. (5) they see it as being far off; (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) The day when the sky will be like molten silver. (8) and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) A remover of exteriors. (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) When they are afflicted, they complain, (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) those who preserve their chastity (29) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - (30) And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. (35)
