The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) his wife, his brother, (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) tearing away his skin! (16) It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] (17) And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. (18) ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Except those who pray, (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) And those who fear the torment of their Lord, (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who are firm upon their testimonies. (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! (35)
