The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So persevere with becoming patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) and no friend will ask about his friend, (10) (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) stripping away his skin, (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) and amassed (riches) and hoarded. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) except those who are steadfast (22) and continue at their prayers, (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who accept the truth of the judgment day (26) and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) and guard their private parts (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). (35)
