The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). (5) They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): (6) And We behold it nigh. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] (17) who amassed and hoarded. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) Fretful when evil befalleth him (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. (21) except those that pray, (22) and continue at their prayers, (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) who honor their trust and promises, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
