The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) and no friend will ask about his friend, (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! For the raging flames of the fire (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) And niggardly when good befalls him (21) Save worshippers. (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, (30) but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
