The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) but We see it near at hand. (7) On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) the kinsmen who gave him shelter, (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! Verily it is a Flame. (15) Dragging by the head, (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) when evil visits him, impatient, (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) except those who are steadfast (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, (25) And those who accept the truth of the judgment day (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) Are free of blame, (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) and who observe their prayers. (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
