The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) behold, they see it as if far off; (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) No, in truth, it is a Furnace! (15) Dragging by the head, (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) who are steadfast in prayer; (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) And those who keep their trusts and covenants; (32) And those who are upright in their testimonies, (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) They will live in gardens with honour. (35)
