The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kin that harboured him (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) It snatches away by the scalps, (16) It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) except those who are steadfast (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) for the needy and the deprived, (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) Are free of blame, (30) but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; (31) And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, (32) And those who are upright in their testimonies, (33) And those who are attentive at their worship. (34) They will live in gardens with honour. (35)
