The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: (5) They deem it to be remote. (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) And his nearest kindred who shelter him (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) tearing away his skin! (16) calling him who drew back and turned away, (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) save those that pray (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - (28) And those who of their private parts are guards. (29) Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) And those who keep their trusts and covenants; (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) and who take due care of their Prayer: (34) They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. (35)
