The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; (5) They deem it to be remote. (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) By no means! For the raging flames of the fire (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) when good visits him, grudging, (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) For the beggar and the destitute. (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
