The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). (5) Indeed, they see it [as] distant, (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) And the hills become as flakes of wool, (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) the kinsmen who gave him shelter, (13) And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: (14) No, in truth, it is a Furnace! (15) Eager to roast; (16) It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. (21) save those that pray (22) Who are at their prayer constant. (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, (27) surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, (30) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) And those who are attentive at their worship. (34) Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
