The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) And his spouse and his brother (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) Dragging by the head, (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. (18) ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) Except those who establish prayer. (22) [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) who guard their privates (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) and who take due care of their Prayer: (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
