The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
