The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. (4) So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. (5) They deem it to be remote. (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) And the hills become as flakes of wool, (9) and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends (10) Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (11) His wife and his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) Dragging by the head, (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. (18) ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) save those that pray (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (24) For the beggar and the destitute. (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) and guard their private parts (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) And those who protect their prayers. (34) Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
