The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) A remover of exteriors. (16) and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) when evil visits him, impatient, (20) And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. (21) Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - (27) Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
