The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. (5) Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) And his spouse and his brother (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) Nay, verily it is a furnace (15) Eager to roast; (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. (19) Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. (21) Not so are the prayerful. (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, (27) for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; (28) and guard their private parts (29) except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, (30) (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
