The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 And We see it nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
