The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore endure with a goodly patience. (5) behold, they see it as if far off; (6) But We see it very near. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. (9) And no friend will ask concerning his friend. (10) Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! (18) ۞ Human beings are created greedy. (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) save those that pray (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment (27) for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who are in their testimonies upright (33) And those who protect their prayers. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
