The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. (3) by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. (4) So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) but We see it to be very near. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) And the hills will be light as wool. (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, (11) and his spouse and his brother, (12) And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) that will strip off the scalp. (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) And niggardly when good reaches him;- (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) Those who are constant at their prayer (23) In whose wealth a due share is included (24) for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) and those who stand by their testimony (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
