The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) they see it as being far off; (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) The day when the sky will be like molten silver. (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend (10) though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) will strip-off the flesh (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) And masseth and then hoardeth. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) And niggardly when good reaches him;- (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) those who preserve their chastity (29) save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) and those who stand by their testimony (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. (35)
