The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore endure with a goodly patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) But We see it very near. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) No, in truth, it is a Furnace! (15) stripping away his skin, (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) bewailing when evil befalls him, (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. (21) except those that pray, (22) Those who are constant at their prayer (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who preserve their chastity (29) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - (30) but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) who testify to what they have witnessed, (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
