The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) The day when the sky will be like molten silver. (8) And the hills will be light as wool. (9) And not a friend shall ask a friend, (10) though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, (11) his companion wife, his brother, (12) his kin who sheltered him, (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: (19) Fretful when evil befalleth him (20) And, when good befalleth him, grudging; (21) except those that pray (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) and fear the chastisement of their Lord (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) and those who are upright in their testimonies; (33) And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
