The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, (2) from God, the Lord of the Stairways. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) his wife, his brother, (12) the kinsmen who gave him shelter, (13) And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. (14) But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Except those who pray, (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; (25) And those who accept the truth of the judgment day (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) and guard their private parts (29) except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, (30) But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) They will be in gardens, honored. (35)
