The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) And his wife and his brother. (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (14) No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), (17) and amassed wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) If evil befalls him he is perturbed; (20) And niggardly when good touches him; (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) and perform their witnessings, (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) They will be in gardens, honored. (35)
