The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. (3) (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) And We see it nigh. (7) On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children (11) And his wife and his brother (12) his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) (13) And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: (14) Nay, verily it is a furnace (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) who are steadfast in prayer; (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) who guard their carnal desires (29) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - (30) But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- (31) and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, (32) and those who stand by their testimony (33) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
