The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) Therefore endure with a goodly patience. (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) And We see it nigh. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) And no friend inquires after friend (10) though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) And his nearest kindred who shelter him (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) stripping away his skin, (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- (19) If evil befalls him he is perturbed; (20) And refraining, when good reaches him. (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) And those who accept the truth of the judgment day (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) And those who keep a guard on their prayer, (34) These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! (35)
