The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; (5) they see it as being far off; (6) while We think that it is near at hand. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) And his spouse and his brother (12) And his kin that sheltered him. (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Dragging by the head, (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) bewailing when evil befalls him, (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) For the needy and those dispossessed, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; (27) For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
