The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) The infidels, of which there is no averter. (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) but We see it near at hand. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) When evil comes upon him he is impatient; (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) Except those who pray, (22) Who are constant at their worship (23) In whose wealth a due share is included (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) who guard their carnal desires (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) Those are highly honored in the Gardens. (35)
