The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) They surely take it to be far away, (6) Whereas We see it impending. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) And the hills will be light as wool. (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. (11) His wife and his brother, (12) his kin who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], (15) Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (16) It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, (17) And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. (18) ۞ Human beings are created greedy. (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) when good visits him, grudging, (21) save those that pray (22) and constant in their prayers. (23) and those in whose wealth there is a known right (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - (27) Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
