The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) So persevere with becoming patience. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) And We see it nigh. (7) On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, (8) and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, (9) even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) his companion wife, his brother, (12) And the family in which he was. (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) But no! There is a raging blaze (15) Eager to roast; (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, (19) bewailing when evil befalls him, (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) save those that pray (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. (24) For the beggar and the destitute. (25) And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. (26) and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, (27) Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. (30) But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who are firm upon their testimonies. (33) And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- (34) all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. (35)
