The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) while We think that it is near at hand. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! Verily it is a Flame. (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) If good comes to him he holds back his hand, (21) except those that pray, (22) Who are at their prayer constant. (23) those who give a due share of their wealth (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) and those who believe in the Day of Judgement (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, (30) And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) and those who are upright in their testimonies; (33) and who observe their prayers. (34) Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
