The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: (5) They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. (6) And We see it nigh. (7) Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) (13) And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: (14) By no means! Verily it is a Flame. (15) that will strip off the scalp. (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. (21) Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) (22) and are constant in their Prayer; (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; (25) who confirm the Day of Reckoning (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from (28) and guard their private parts (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. (31) And those who respect their trusts and covenants; (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) and who observe their prayers. (34) Those shall be in gardens, honored. (35)
