The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. (3) Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. (5) They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. (17) and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. (18) ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) And niggardly when good touches him; (21) except those that pray (22) [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. (28) And those who guard their private parts, (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) and standby their witnessing, (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
