The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; (5) Verily they behold it afar off. (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) And his kin that harboured him (13) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) calling him who drew back and turned away, (17) who amassed and hoarded. (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) who are constant in prayer; (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, (31) who honor their trust and promises, (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) and who take due care of their Prayer: (34) They will live in gardens with honour. (35)
