The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. (2) From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, (8) And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) his kin who sheltered him, (13) and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. (14) No, in truth, it is a Furnace! (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (19) when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, (20) And, when good befalleth him, grudging; (21) except those that pray, (22) [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) For the petitioner and the deprived - (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) and fear the chastisement of their Lord (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; (31) And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive (32) who testify to what they have witnessed, (33) and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
