The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, (8) and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, (9) no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) stripping away his skin, (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Except those who pray, (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) who guard their privates (29) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- (34) all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. (35)
