The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) The day the sky becomes like molten brass, (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) and no friend will ask about his friend, (10) Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, (11) And his wife and his brother, (12) and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) No, in truth, it is a Furnace! (15) Dragging by the head, (16) It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, (21) except those who are steadfast (22) Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); (23) And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged (24) For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) And those who fear the torment of their Lord, (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who preserve their chastity (29) Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
