The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) from God, the Lord of the Stairways. (3) Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. (5) Verily they behold it afar off. (6) but We see it near at hand. (7) It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, (8) and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. (9) And no friend will ask after a friend, (10) although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, (11) His wife and his brother, (12) And his kindred who sheltered him, (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) Those who are constant at their prayer (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) For the beggar and the destitute; (25) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense (26) and fear the chastisement of their Lord (27) Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - (28) who guard their privates (29) Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, (32) And those who are upright in their testimonies, (33) And those who of their prayer are observant. (34) It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. (35)
