The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall (1) Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, (2) [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: (3) all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. (6) But We see it very near. (7) The day when the sky will be like molten silver. (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) And his spouse and his brother. (12) and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), (17) and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. (18) ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- (19) Very nervous when touched by misfortune. (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. (21) Except those who establish prayer. (22) who are steadfast in prayer; (23) And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. (24) for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, (25) who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) who guard their carnal desires (29) Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; (32) and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; (33) And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. (34) Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. (35)
