The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall (1) (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) behold, they see it as if far off; (6) While we behold it nigh: (7) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, (8) and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, (10) They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. (11) and of his spouse, and of his brother, (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) By no means! For the raging flames of the fire (15) A remover of exteriors. (16) It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, (17) who amassed and hoarded. (18) ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. (21) except those who are steadfast (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) In whose wealth a due share is included (24) For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) (25) who confirm the Day of Doom (26) And those who fear the torment of their Lord, (27) Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - (28) who guard their privates (29) except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- (30) And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers (31) And those who keep their trusts and covenants; (32) and those who are upright in their testimonies; (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
