The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall (1) those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, (2) From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways (3) all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… (4) So be thou patient with a sweet patience; (5) Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, (6) And We behold it nigh. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the hills become as flakes of wool, (9) and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, (10) though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) And the family in which he was. (13) and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, (17) who amassed and hoarded. (18) ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) who, from their wealth is a known right (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, (26) And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- (27) Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- (28) and who are mindful of their chastity, (29) save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy (30) whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured.
