The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). (5) They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): (6) but, We see it as near! (7) The day when the sky will be like molten silver. (8) The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) his companion wife, his brother, (12) and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, (13) And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) And niggardly when good befalls him (21) Not so are the prayerful. (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] (24) For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, (27) Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - (28) And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, (32) And those who are firm upon their testimonies. (33) and who are constant in their prayers. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
