The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen (1) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. (3) The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) Lo! they behold it afar off (6) But We see it (quite) near. (7) The day the sky becomes like molten brass, (8) And the mountains will be like wool, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. (11) And his wife and his brother (12) His kindred who sheltered him, (13) and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. (14) By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- (15) Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- (16) and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), (17) And masseth and then hoardeth. (18) ۞ Surely man was created fretful, (19) when evil visits him, impatient, (20) And when good touches him, withholding [of it], (21) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. (22) Those who are constant in their prayer (23) who, from their wealth is a known right (24) for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; (25) And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from (28) And those who guard their private parts (29) except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. (30) So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. (31) and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, (32) and perform their witnessings, (33) And those who protect their prayers. (34) such people will receive due honor in Paradise. (35)
