The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God (2) (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. (3) On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. (4) So be patient with gracious patience. (5) They surely take it to be far away, (6) while We think that it is near at hand. (7) On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper (8) And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, (9) And friend shall not ask of friend (10) as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, (11) And his spouse and his brother. (12) and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, (13) and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. (14) By no means! It will be the fierce flame (15) That would skin the scalp. (16) calling him who drew back and turned away, (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! (18) ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. (19) When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. (20) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. (21) Except the observers of prayer - (22) [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) for the beggar and the outcast, (25) And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, (26) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies; (33) And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. (34) Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. (35)
