The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. (5) they see it as being far off; (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) and no friend will ask about his friend, (10) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children (11) his companion (wife), his brother, (12) And his nearest kindred who shelter him (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire (15) snatching away the scalp, (16) It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] (17) And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). (18) ۞ Human beings are created greedy. (19) When evil touches him, impatient, (20) And niggardly when good touches him; (21) Not so those devoted to Prayer;- (22) Who persevere in devotion, (23) They are those who assign a certain share of their property (24) for the needy and the deprived, (25) and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; (26) And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- (27) the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, (28) And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; (31) And those who keep their trusts and covenants; (32) And those who stand by their testimony (33) and are steadfast in their prayers. (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
