The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come (1) for the unbelievers, which none may avert, (2) From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. (3) The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; (5) Surely they think it to be far off, (6) But We see it [as] near. (7) The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). (8) and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, (9) And no friend will ask of a friend, (10) Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, (11) And his wife and his brother (12) And his kin that harboured him (13) and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. (14) By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (15) A fire that melts the hide. (16) and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], (17) And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. (18) ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. (19) [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; (20) but when good comes upon him, he is grudging (21) Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) (22) Those who are regular in their prayers. (23) And those in whose riches is a known right. (24) to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; (25) And those who accept the truth of the judgment day (26) And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- (27) Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - (28) and those who guard their private parts, (29) [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (30) And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers (31) And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. (32) Who uphold their testimonies, (33) And those who protect their prayers. (34) Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). (35)
