The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place (1) Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- (2) From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), (3) To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. (4) Therefore endure with a goodly patience. (5) behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away (6) but We see it is nigh. (7) The day when the sky will become as molten copper, (8) And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. (9) And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend (10) though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, (11) and his spouse and his brother, (12) And his family who had stood by him, (13) And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. (14) But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell (15) Flaying off the scalp-skin. (16) Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] (17) Who amasses and then hoards. (18) ۞ Human beings are created greedy. (19) When they are afflicted, they complain, (20) And, when good befalleth him, grudging; (21) Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) (22) and constant in their prayers. (23) those in whose wealth is a right known (24) For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (25) And those who testify to the Day of Requital. (26) And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - (27) for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29) Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, (30) But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. (31) And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. (32) And those who stand firm in their testimonies. (33) and who take due care of their Prayer: (34) These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. (35)
